Two tomatoes on a sarong
I intended this to be just a colourful painting, It was ok till I added the background. I painted the background yellow, then green, then panicked and painted it indigo. If it was done on the computer I would control Z a few steps and try turquoise.

Despite your various attempts at the background (or maybe because of them) it works and accentuates the brightness of the sarong. Not sure why one has tomatoes on a sarong, but why not.

It would be interesting to see the effect of a different coloured background, why don’t you photoshop some(eg, red?)? The sarong is colourful, its folds and stripes very realistic. I quite like the surreality(?) of tomatoes on a sarong, it makes you wonder why the situation happened.

I agree with Jane that the background really works, especially with the directional brush strokes. And I also agree with Viv, that the sarong comes across very well. Maybe this comment should come with a “nothing original to say” health warning.

like the indigo background but would not have been so effective without the previous colours. I havent commented before now as I wanted to see what everyone else was saying about the mix of tomatoes and sarongs. Is the sarong yours ? Do you do the gardening in it humming a gentle CariƱosa while you flick away at the greenflies? Does this explain the tomatoes – I think we should be told.

I was casting around for a title. It was literally two tomatoes on a sarong which sounded quite amusing, so the title chose itself. Why tomatoes and a sarong? Because they were the most colourful things I could lay my hands on. I wanted colours which clashed hence the bright coloured background. Wish I left it now because it was better. yellow.

Well, I’ll never know if the yellow as better, but the way the background is now looks pretty good to me. The painting has a feel of gauguin about it – a dusky maiden just paused in her gardening for a dip in the tropical pool (well, it’s a nicer mental image than dave swatting greenfly in a skirt!)
