In the middle of 6 hr hike to the Poqueira Refuge and back. At 2,500m we sat outside the refuge and ate lunch. It was a wonderful view, but somehow my colourful treatment of the mountains reduced their scale and grandeur. Back at our Villa, I found some watercolour paintings of a similar view in a book and was surprised how muted and blue the artist had painted them, For some reason this made the mountains look much more massive.

I don’t think this is too colourful at all and is nicely muted. There is a lovely sense of recession. I think that the only thing to change or rather to add is to introduce some darker tones in places – maybe at the bottom of the big mountain range, which would heighten the contrast with the sloping field and could possibly make the mountain look bigger. Then again I could be talking absolute drivel here.
