Almost Midnight by David

I wanted to do something a bit sinister for this category. My inspiration was a dramatic skyline behind a brutally trimmed hedgerow as the sun set in Norfolk. Initially I was just going to paint this and then I decided to extend the idea, Earlier in the walk we had seen a barn owl flying ghost like up the margin of the field. However I chose an eagle owl for its coal fire eyes. I wanted to portray the brutality of nature and deliberately painted the unfortunate mouse a deathly green to accentuate its fate. But as always I slipped into painting too much detail, but i enjoyed it until the hedge.

My birthday is on New Year’s Day and this is my flat on New Year’s Eve 2008 at almost Midnight.  Couple of things – one, I really need to buy some more furniture and two – could I be any sadder?

Chicken Licken's bad dream

This is scene I hope our new chickens will not have to witness. It’s in my mind around midnight, when I imagine the bad things prowling round their flimsy ark.

I’m almost sure this was ‘almost midnight’, this is a recent full moon in the garden, the surroundings should probably have been darker, although it was actually really bright ( from memory).

This was a difficult subject. I did a colour sketch in the dark then redid it in the light. The use of dark colours was quite a challenge. My cat thought it was hard work as well.
