PS You can see John’s other leg if you look carefully!
Apologies for putting on two versions of the same painting, but they both came out so differently I didn’t know which one I preferred. Maybe 8 out of 10 cats will prefer version 2. Again speedy sketches r us, especially this one. I have an idea for a third version, where the background is in similar colours and shapes to the big cat and it takes awhile for the viewer to spot the animal, however that would take a long long time to paint and is probably beyond me.
I did this sketch at Brancaster harbour, then painted it at home.
I used some liquid watercolours Dave had given me, and they had really strange qualities – they bled into other colours immediately, even when the other colour was bone dry. Also, if I mixed the colours, they split on the page. I did want to do a more colourful painting than usual – we saw some rather nice watercolours for sale in the cafe at Cley which Dave said were too colourful for him, but I rather liked. But the liquid paints were more than I could deal with, so I finished the painting using my usual pans of solid colour. There’s all sorts of things wrong with it, but I know I’ve lapsed so far behind everyone I really must put something on the site!
I wanted to contrast the cosiness of surburbia with the slight paranoia of the neighbourhood watch scheme . The watcher has ended up looking very unsinister which wasn’t my aim, my people never do what I want them to!
Here’s the first attempt, I didn’t use it because I thought the woman was too kindly looking.
