This picture was something of a journey for me. The intention was that the guy in the middle who has lost everything would be the focus of the painting. But I was unable to maintain a consistent enough style on the other people to make him stand out. There is too much variation in tone between the people and it it just doesn’t hang together. However, in my impatience to get it finished I discovered sometechiques for faster painting which I thought were more effective. I leave it to you to guess which figures I painted first and last. Oh – and my emotion – may they rot in the hell of the trading floor.
All who were at Shere for the painting day out can vouch for my emotion at painting this – I was so irate with it that I chucked my water over it. Back home I was determined not to be beaten and had a go at improving it. Is better than it was. I was amazed to find in my new painting manual that pouring water over a picture (hot or cold) is a useful technique. The manual does not have a section on bad moods.
This is the Greenan Shore, Ayrshire at sunset. A place that I, and other members of my family, have gone to after traumas in our lives, so a place that will always evoke emotion in me. A sunset, because, done well they also provoke emotion for me. However, this one is not done well. The sky started well but as I went down the page the painting went downhill too.
