Our garden walls have been written on by nature with a wonderful variety of lichen, mo
ss and ferns. After a bit of googling I think the white lichen on this bit of wall is Diploicia canescens, with small patches of the orange xanthoria. There is stonecrop growing in the cracks. I was so amazed when I looked properly at the walls, how much I have taken them for granted and not really considered how beautiful they are. Most of our walls are limestone with semi-circular sandstone capping stones, but this part of the wall is right next to the house and built with the same sandstone blocks as are used for the building corner stones.
