Waves Crashing Against a Stone Jetty by Sue (middlesex)

Waves Crashing Against a Stone Jetty by Sue (middlesex)

The watercolour was done pretty quickly with a paintbrush in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. I took it to the art class today and my teacher has suggested that the sea needs much more shadow and more variation in the grey of the jetty/harbour thing, but I thought it was fairer to show you the original without doing these changes.

I was reluctant to send this, but Sandra says you haven’t done one yet, so maybe I’ll win by being the only entrant!

My idea was to show the impact of splitting the log, dark mossy green on the outside, fresh new wood inside, but then I used lemon yellow on the wood and it all looked so horrid I threw down my brush.
I couldn’t bear to look at it, and when I thought I might have a go at improving it, I’d packed my paints, so couldn’t do anything anyway.

Egg broken into a white bowl

Egg broken into a white bowl

Well maybe not quite impact.

I was desperate. And it was a real struggle.

The egg white was so translucent all my subtle tones havent shown on the scan.

Still had the problem of getting a depth of colour in one hit, so went over and over the egg shell until it looks too patchy

I was working in my kitchen which has multiple spotlights so I had no defined light source. I impacted the egg into a white bowl and made the mistake of trying to paint the shadows of the bowl which just looks like some grey smears.

Note: The winning photograph in the Guardian which was an egg broken into flour was published after I had painted this.
