Change of address

I am always fascinated by abandoned things. When did someone last climb out of a car now a rusting shell in an overgrown bramble patch. Who left a pile of building materials and a wheel barrow and never returned. Who last shut the door on the cottage which is now just a tumbledown wreck. In this case, there is a door in Watts Lane, Teddington, which looks as though it hasn’t been opened for decades. Two letterboxes have been sealed with makeshift wooden blocks and the paintwork and wooden is gradually rotting and flaking away. Who last closed that door never to open it again? Whoever it was, affixed a plaque to the door saying ‘Any Mail to 83 High Street’ scrawled in pink paint. I haven’t checked to see who is at 83 High Street, but I have never seen a soul enter or leave the house. So this painting is for ‘change’. We leave our marks, time passes, times change and gradually our marks flake away and we are forgotten.
