Flagstone factory dock, Caithness

We visited a local gallery where there were some lovely paintings by Clare Money of derelict docklands in the North East, bold and simple. When we went up to Caithness a couple of years ago, we visited the site of an old flagstone factory and dock where the flagstones were exported round the world. I wanted to paint it at the time but couldn’t see how I could make a picture out of such a bleak scene. Clare’s paintings inspired me to give it a try. My first version had a very weedy feel. I thought that darkening the sea might help. Not really 😦 You can see what I was striving to emulate and how far I fell short here: http://www.up-front.com/exhibitor_profiles.php?ExhibitorID=50
